I used to think I had a sleep problem.
Looking back...
I don't think I did.
I had a stress problem.
An exam problem.
An on-call NHS problem.
A newborn baby problem.
A redundancy problem.
Sleep was simply where all those things showed up.
For years I tried the obvious solutions.
More tea.
More coffee.
Energy drinks.
Caffeine tablets.
Melatonin.
Staying up later.
Trying harder to sleep.
Eventually I realised something.
The harder I tried to sleep...
The more awake I became.
Today my sleep isn't perfect.
Nobody's is.
Sometimes I wake earlier than I'd like.
Sometimes I take a little longer to drift off.
The difference is...
It no longer bothers me.
Because I'm no longer fighting sleep.
I'm working with my mind instead of against it.
Sometimes changing the relationship with the problem changes the problem itself.
