Stoicism teaches that virtue (arete) is the only true good, and it consists of four cardinal virtues:
- Wisdom (Sophia) – Practical insight, good judgment, and the ability to navigate life logically.
- Courage (Andreia) – Moral bravery, endurance, and facing challenges with resilience.
- Justice (Dikaiosyne) – Leadership, fairness, integrity, and treating others with respect.
- Temperance (Sophrosyne) – Self-control, moderation, and avoiding excess.
5 Modern Examples of Practicing Each Virtue
1. Wisdom (Sophia)
- Research before forming opinions – Instead of reacting to headlines, fact-check and think critically.
- Learn from mistakes – Reflect on failures (feedback) to improve future decisions.
- Seek mentors – Ask experienced colleagues for advice rather than relying solely on ego.
- Meditate on long-term consequences – Before impulsive purchases, ask: "Will this benefit me in 5 years?"
- Practice "the view from above" – Zoom out: "Will this problem matter in a year?"
2. Courage (Andreia)
- Speak up against injustice – Call out unethical behavior at work, even if it’s unpopular.
- Start a difficult conversation – Address relationship issues honestly instead of avoiding them.
- Quit a toxic job – Leave security for a better path, despite fear of the unknown.
- Admit when you’re wrong – Apologize sincerely instead of doubling down on pride.
- Face a fear daily – Public speaking, cold showers, or asking for a raise. Get out of your comfort zone.
3. Justice (Dikaiosyne)
- Tip fairly & support ethical businesses – Choose companies that treat workers well.
- Volunteer or donate – Help others without expecting recognition.
- Listen more than you speak – Give others space to be heard in conversations.
- Stand up for someone bullied – Defend a coworker or stranger facing unfair treatment.
- Keep promises – Show up on time, meet deadlines, and follow through.
4. Temperance (Sophrosyne)
- Limit social media – Set app timers to avoid mindless scrolling.
- Eat & drink mindfully – Enjoy food without overindulging; skip the third drink.
- Budget wisely – Save 20% of income instead of impulsive spending.
- Pause before reacting – When angry, take 10 deep breaths before responding.
- Declutter possessions – Keep only what adds value (Stoic minimalism).
