There no doubt that we all like getting the sander out to improve a piece. But sometimes it’s more valuable to assess and clean first… check out this example.

The difference a finish can make - OIL
It never ceases to amaze me the difference each timber looks when it is stripped back and then treated. This is some vintage Mahogany that has been sanded and simply oiled with Linseed oil. It also shows that when you finish a piece to always try a small area first to ensure you are getting the outcome you expect.

Sanding is where the work and the value can be found.
A very quick video to remind you how impactful removing the old surface can be to reveal the grain and the value. So many people feel that a scared piece is not worth working on... but a few hours work can save $1000s. (This is a current project of mine).

Gluing an Edwardian table... very wobbly!
Another 'simple' job today. A lovely Edwardian table with seriously wobbly legs! Well I say simple - the old screws were a nightmare so had to drill them out! They a cross clamp formation to hold the glue and put in new/old screws... only 3 more to go!

What happens when you treat raw Oak with Satin polyurethane? ❀️
There is something about taking raw timber and bringing it alive with a finish to see all of that grain and preserve it. Depending on the outcome you are looking for, or more important the level of protection, will depend on the finish you use. I have been experimenting loads with a Satin polyurethane at the moment as it brings out the grain, but I know will protect the furniture.
