he argued the whole way there
the mind is funny sometimes.
it argues & fights
against what the heart & body know to be true.
my son argued & complained the whole way over to the pond the other day.
I had this brilliant idea to ride bikes to a sweet little pond near our house
bring a picnic
be calmed by the waters...
then i thought
"ooohhh! when i pick him up from his homeschool co-op
i'll take us to a little organic cafe & buy him a cookie.
then we can take our treats to the pond and have the most lovely afternoon!"
On our way to the cafe, he complained. He didn't want to go to THAT cafe.
He wanted gelato.
We got to the cafe
he whined & complained that he didn't want a treat from there.
My friend who owns the cafe is a mama too & she helped me stay calm & present
I stayed calm the whole time despite the urge to get upset.
I ordered 1 peanut butter cookie & 1 brownie
He said he didn't want any & i said that's fine, i could eat both ๐Ÿ˜‰
We finally ride our bikes about a mile to the pond.
we arrive & settle & lay out a blanket
He gets a few bites in him of the other food i brought
we sit there quietly & eat. I requested it since I was tired of the griping
Then some duck friends come over
and geese & coots & lots & lots of them!
I see his whole energy change from just 20 minutes or so in nature
His fatigue drops away
his irritation diminishes
and he becomes fully present.
eating our picnic,
feeding the birds
being present, wild, & free
we both end up barefoot on the earth, surrounded by ducks
keeping perfectly still so we can observe their beauty
learning about local birds
truly enjoying each other's presence.
then it's time for desert ๐Ÿ˜œ
we each get half of each treat
they are delicious
he says, "i didn't realize they would be this good."
i giggle.
"it's ok buddy" i say
i love you
