MAIA AI Safety Fundamentals Fellowship Application (Summer '26)
Each semester, MAIA runs a reading group on why AI safety matters and what's being done about it, covering AI's trajectory, misalignment, technical safety, policy, and careers in the field. Cohorts meet once a week in small groups facilitated by a top MAIA member. The summer cohort meets over Zoom. Sessions include dedicated reading time, so there's no assigned reading outside of meetings—though recommended readings are available for those who want to go deeper. The fellowship is open to anyone: undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and beyond. For more on the curriculum and FAQ, visit https://aialignment.mit.edu/getinvolved/. Questions can be directed to maia-exec@mit.edu. If you're more interested in the policy and governance side of AI safety, consider applying to the intro policy fellowship run by our sister organization at Harvard, AISST: https://aisst.ai/policy-fellowship. Deadline: May 22nd at 11:59 PM EST https://airtable.com/appHwdJxaquLCsb75/pagWI2NzqQcyF37iQ/form

Need a breakdown of a technical concept? Use this prompt!
ChatGPT Prompt: "Explain [TOPIC] using a highly structured visual-thinking approach that makes complex ideas easy to understand, remember, and mentally visualize. Break the topic into clear sections using text-based diagrams, flowcharts, layered frameworks, timelines, systems maps, comparisons, mental models, and step-by-step structures wherever relevant. Instead of giving only paragraphs of explanation, organize the information like a visual blueprint in written form showing how concepts connect, influence each other, and build progressively from simple foundations to advanced understanding. Use arrows, hierarchies, categories, and cause-and-effect relationships to simulate visual learning inside text. Prioritize clarity, intuitive understanding, and pattern recognition over jargon-heavy explanations. For abstract concepts, create analogies or real-world visual metaphors that make the idea easier to “see” mentally. If processes are involved, explain them like a flowchart with sequential stages and feedback loops. If systems are involved, explain inputs, outputs, dependencies, and interactions between components. Use concise labels, structured formatting, and visual spacing so the explanation feels like studying an interactive whiteboard rather than reading an essay. End with a simplified “mental snapshot” summary that compresses the entire topic into one easy-to-remember framework or visual scene I can instantly recall later."
