🌿🗒️🔥NOTES BOOST 8/11/2026
Notes.... I wrote word about ten minutes ago - I keep getting distracted with the Podcast Challenge - LOL Our team is in the lead in case you're wondering. Alright back to notes.
📝 Why I Keep Encouraging You to Post 3 Notes a Day
I talk about Notes a lot around here — and there’s a reason.
Notes are one of the best discovery tools Substack gives us.
Your newsletter primarily nurtures the people who have already found you.
Notes can introduce you to people who have absolutely no idea who you are yet. 👋
Claudia Faith recently shared that one of her posts brought her 33 new subscribers. Only TWO came from her email list. Seventeen came through the Substack feed - and of 578 views attributed to the Substack app, 537 were from people who weren't already subscribed to her.
💡 That’s what I want you to understand about Notes.
You are not just talking to the people who already follow you.
You're putting little breadcrumbs into the Substack ecosystem that can lead the right people back to you.
🤔 So why 3 Notes a day?
Not because every Note is going to take off.
It won't.
In fact, an analysis of 1.3 million Notes found that true viral Notes were incredibly rare - roughly 1 in 10,000. (as we saw from @Soph Newman and her 10K followers experiment though it can happen)
And I actually think that's good news.
🚫 We don't need to chase viral.
We're building consistent visibility.
Three Notes a day gives you 21 opportunities every week for someone new to encounter an idea, story, observation or belief that makes them think:
Oh. I like how this person thinks.
✨ That's the job of a Note.
Derek Hughes describes Notes as little acts of positioning.
You're showing people:
👉 how you think
👉 what you value
👉 what you believe
👉 who you're for
The right people recognize themselves in what you're saying - and everyone else can keep scrolling.
That's very different from trying to cram a miniature newsletter into every Note.
✍️ A Note can simply be...
💭 A thought.
👀 An observation.
🔥 Something you believe.
📖 A tiny story.
🔄 A reframe.
🫶 A moment of permission someone needed today.
Derek had one six-line Note reach 44,000 impressions, 3,200 likes and bring in 169 new subscribers.
It wasn't a tutorial.
It wasn't a list of steps.
It simply gave people permission to stop doing something they felt they should be doing.
And that's another important piece:
❤️ Notes don't need to teach. They need to connect.
One analysis of high-performing Notes found that the strongest Notes tended to go in one of two directions:
⚡ A very short, punchy thought.
OR
📖 A longer, genuine story.
The tidy middle-sized “here are some tips” Note was largely absent from the highest-performing group.
So please don't make posting three Notes a day mean creating three pieces of polished content.
That's exhausting.
Instead, think:
👀 Three chances to be seen.
💬 Three chances to start a conversation.
❤️ Three chances for someone to recognize themselves in your words.
🚀 And then we add the Daily Notes Boost.
This is where we stop treating Substack like a broadcast platform.
Post your Notes, then come into the Boost and interact with other people's Notes.
👀 Read them.
❤️ Like the ones you genuinely like.
🔁 Restack something worth sharing.
💬 Leave a thoughtful comment when you have something to say.
Derek actually talks about changing his own behavior this way - spending time scrolling, liking new writers and paying attention to quieter voices instead of simply broadcasting his own work.
Because visibility works better when there's a human being attached to it.
And especially when you're smaller, conversations matter.
One of the Notes strategies I shared above recommends replying to every comment and spending your daily Notes time on the part that can't be batched:
💬 Having actual conversations.
🌱 That's why the Boost isn't an engagement pod.
It's a discovery habit.
We're giving ourselves a reason to get into the Notes feed...
🔎 Discover each other.
💬 Have conversations.
🤝 Build relationships.
🌎 Become part of the larger Substack ecosystem.
🧪 So here's the experiment I'd love you to try:
Post 3 Notes a day.
And one important rule:
🚫 Don't make them promotional.
Notes aren't the place to constantly pitch your offer, push your newsletter or ask people to buy something.
Think connection before conversion.
Instead, vary what you're sharing:
✨ A short thought that makes someone stop.
👀 An observation you've been noticing.
❤️ Something that makes someone feel seen.
📖 A small piece of your own story.
🔥 A belief you stand behind.
🔄 A reframe that helps someone see something differently.
🫶 A little permission to let go of something they've been carrying.
And don't make all three sound the same.
One Note. One idea. One human moment.
Write each one so it can stand completely on its own - even if the person reading it has never seen your name before.
Then spend a few minutes inside the Daily Notes Boost supporting and discovering other people.
Because the goal of Notes isn't:
“How can I sell to this person?”
It's:
“How can I give the right person a reason to want to know more about me?”
Your profile, publication, posts and offers can take it from there. 💜

☕ Notes, Chats & Articles
Think of Substack like a coffee house where relationships naturally deepen.
☕ Notes are stopping by someone’s table.
They’re quick exchanges—a thought, an observation, something useful, funny, interesting or encouraging. You might chat for a moment and then keep moving. Notes help new people encounter you and begin to recognize you.
🪑 Chats are pulling up a chair.
You’re intentionally starting a conversation and inviting people to join you. There’s more back-and-forth, more participation and more opportunity to get to know one another.
🏡 Articles invite people into your home.
Now you’re giving them more of your time, your thinking, your stories and your expertise. They’ve moved beyond simply encountering you—they’re choosing to spend more time in your world.
Notes create encounters.
Chats create conversations.
Articles deepen relationships.
And that’s really what Substack is built for: giving people natural ways to move from “Who is this?” to “I want to hear more from them.”
