Most of the time, when we are dealing with pain - we are so focused on the pain that we lose sight of the hidden factors that are contributing to our issues.
What do I mean by this?
I don't mean that your pain isn't real. It absolutely is.
What I mean is that your sciatica, knee pain, or joint discomfort is often just the messenger - not the root problem.
Here's what I see time and time again:
Someone comes in with shooting sciatic pain down their leg. They want relief for their sciatic nerve. But when we dig deeper, we discover their hips are completely locked up from years of sitting.
Their glutes have stopped firing properly. Their pelvis is tilted. The sciatica? It's just the alarm bell telling us something upstream needs attention.
Or take knee pain. You might be icing your knee, wearing a brace, even considering surgery. But the real issue could be weak hips that aren't stabilizing your leg properly, or tight ankles that are forcing your knee to compensate with every step you take.
Joint pain works the same way. Your shoulder might be screaming, but the real culprit could be your thoracic spine mobility, your posture, or even how you're breathing under stress.
The issue is not the issue.
The pain is where your body finally said "enough" - but the problem started somewhere else, often long before you felt anything at all.
This is why chasing the pain rarely works long-term. You can ice it, rest it, even medicate it. But if you're not addressing the underlying movement dysfunction, muscle imbalances, or compensatory patterns, you're just putting a band-aid on a structural problem.
So what's the solution?
Stop treating the symptom. Start treating the system.
That means looking at how your body moves as a whole, identifying the weak links, and restoring proper function from the ground up.
When you do this, something remarkable happens: the pain you've been battling for months or even years often resolves on its own - because you finally addressed what was actually broken.
