From Lines to Intelligence
In the first article of this series, I introduced Sunrise 2027 as one of those quiet technological revolutions that most people will not notice until it has become part of everyday life. This time, let us look beneath the surface and explore what is actually changing.
For more than fifty years, we have become accustomed to seeing the familiar black lines printed on almost every product we purchase. We scan them at self-checkouts, watch cashiers pass them over laser scanners, and rarely give them a second thought. Yet those little lines are surprisingly limited.
The barcode we have known for decades is called a one-dimensional, or 1D, barcode. The name is not particularly exciting, but it accurately describes how it works. All of the information is stored in a single direction, across the width of the code.
Think of it as a street address. The address tells you where to find the house, but it tells you nothing about the people who live there, what the house looks like, or what is happening inside. To learn those things, you have to go somewhere else.
Traditional barcodes work in much the same way. When a cashier scans a carton of milk, the barcode is not saying, "I am two litres of whole milk with an expiration date of Friday." Instead, it is saying something much simpler. "I am product number 123456789."
The store's computer then searches its database for product number 123456789 and discovers everything else; the description, the current price, the tax category, the supplier, and any other detail required to complete the sale. The barcode itself is little more than a reference number.
That approach has worked remarkably well for decades, but it has its limitations.
Now imagine replacing that simple street address with an entire information package. That is the promise of the new two-dimensional, or 2D, barcode.
Instead of storing information in only one direction, a 2D code stores information both horizontally and vertically. Those familiar square QR codes are one example, although Sunrise 2027 uses a standardized version developed by GS1 specifically for commercial applications.
The result is a dramatic increase in capacity. Instead of carrying only a product number, a 2D barcode can also include information such as a batch or lot number, a manufacturing date, an expiration date, a serial number, or a secure web address leading to additional product information.
Suddenly, the barcode becomes much more than an identifier. It becomes a messenger. Imagine picking up a jar of honey. Instead of merely telling the checkout scanner what product it is, the code could also identify the exact production batch, indicate when it was packaged, confirm its best-before date, and connect you directly to information about where it was produced and how it was harvested. The product begins carrying part of its own story.
If you are a coach, author, consultant, or content creator, it is worth pausing for a moment. Your books, workbooks, journals, printed guides, and even your business cards are products, too. They have traditionally been static; once printed, they could not change. The emerging GS1 standards hint at a future where every printed resource can maintain a living connection to updated information, videos, bonus materials, and evolving conversations long after it leaves the printer.
That seemingly small change has enormous consequences. Retailers can manage inventory more accurately. Manufacturers can trace products with greater precision. Consumers gain access to reliable information directly from the source. Most importantly, everyone is working from the same information rather than relying on separate databases that may or may not be current.
In many ways, this mirrors a broader shift taking place throughout technology. For years, we have moved from systems that simply identify things to systems that understand them. Artificial intelligence is one example. Smartphones are another. Now even the humble barcode is becoming part of that transformation.
As we continue this series, you will see that the real value is not in storing more information. The real value lies in what becomes possible once every individual product can carry its own identity and communicate it instantly. That is when the barcode stops being a collection of lines and begins becoming something far more intelligent.
