║▌║█║▌│║ Sunrise 2027 #2
From Lines to Intelligence In the first article of this series, I introduced Sunrise 2027 as one of those quiet technological revolutions that most people will not notice until it has become part of everyday life. This time, let us look beneath the surface and explore what is actually changing. For more than fifty years, we have become accustomed to seeing the familiar black lines printed on almost every product we purchase. We scan them at self-checkouts, watch cashiers pass them over laser scanners, and rarely give them a second thought. Yet those little lines are surprisingly limited. The barcode we have known for decades is called a one-dimensional, or 1D, barcode. The name is not particularly exciting, but it accurately describes how it works. All of the information is stored in a single direction, across the width of the code. Think of it as a street address. The address tells you where to find the house, but it tells you nothing about the people who live there, what the house looks like, or what is happening inside. To learn those things, you have to go somewhere else. Traditional barcodes work in much the same way. When a cashier scans a carton of milk, the barcode is not saying, "I am two litres of whole milk with an expiration date of Friday." Instead, it is saying something much simpler. "I am product number 123456789." The store's computer then searches its database for product number 123456789 and discovers everything else; the description, the current price, the tax category, the supplier, and any other detail required to complete the sale. The barcode itself is little more than a reference number. That approach has worked remarkably well for decades, but it has its limitations. Now imagine replacing that simple street address with an entire information package. That is the promise of the new two-dimensional, or 2D, barcode. Instead of storing information in only one direction, a 2D code stores information both horizontally and vertically. Those familiar square QR codes are one example, although Sunrise 2027 uses a standardized version developed by GS1 specifically for commercial applications.

More Than Just a Barcode There are some technological changes that arrive with great fanfare. New smartphones are unveiled on brightly lit stages. Artificial intelligence dominates the headlines. Electric vehicles spark endless debates. Then there are the quiet revolutions. They happen in the background, almost unnoticed, until one day we realize the world works differently than it did before. I believe Sunrise 2027 is one of those quiet revolutions. If you have not heard the term before, do not worry. Most people have not. Yet over the next few years it will affect manufacturers, retailers, online sellers, and eventually anyone who buys a product from a store or receives a package at their door. To understand why, let us begin with something we see almost every day.; the humble barcode. For more than fifty years, those familiar black lines have been the silent workhorses of modern commerce. Every time a cashier scans a box of cereal, a bottle of shampoo, or a tube of toothpaste, that little collection of lines tells the store's computer what product it is looking at. It is simple. It is fast. It has served us remarkably well. What many people do not realize is that the traditional barcode does not actually know very much. It is little more than an identification number. The store's computer must look up that number in its own database to learn everything else; the product's name, price, size, tax status, and countless other details. The barcode itself is surprisingly unintelligent. Many people assume the next step is simply replacing those familiar lines with QR codes. After all, we have all become accustomed to scanning QR codes in restaurants, on advertisements, and even on business cards. Most of us think of them as nothing more than shortcuts to websites. That is only part of the story. The real change is much larger. Behind the scenes, an international organization called GS1, the same organization responsible for the barcode system used around the world today, is leading a global initiative known as Sunrise 2027.

🌍 One Last Sunrise
Today is our last day here in Sango, Save Valley Conservancy… and I already know this place is going to stay in my heart for a very long time. ❤️ When we first arrived, we didn’t even have our luggage. 😅 Everything we packed was somewhere else in the world, and for a few days we were just figuring it out one day at a time. But you know what? Sometimes the best memories have nothing to do with what you packed. They come from the people you meet, the sunsets you watch, the quiet moments in nature, and the reminders that life doesn’t have to move so fast. Zimbabwe has been absolutely incredible. The kindness of the people, the beauty of the wildlife, and the peacefulness here have been something I’ll never forget. 🦏 Three fun facts about Sango / Save Valley Conservancy: • It’s one of the largest private wildlife conservancies in Africa, covering more than 3,000 square kilometers. • It’s home to endangered animals like black rhinos, wild dogs, cheetahs, elephants, lions, and leopards, all helping important conservation efforts. • Every safari drive is completely different. You can drive the same route twice and have a totally different adventure because the animals are always on the move! Tomorrow we’re heading back to Harare for one night (fingers crossed 🤞 our luggage finally catches up with us!). Then… it’s off to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World… 🌊 Victoria Falls! Here are three amazing facts I can’t wait to experience: • Locally it’s called Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means “The Smoke That Thunders.” • It’s over 1.7 km (more than a mile) wide, making it the world’s largest sheet of falling water. • On a full moon, you can sometimes see a rare moonbow—a rainbow created by moonlight instead of sunlight! This trip has reminded me that sometimes the biggest adventures begin when your plans don’t. ❤️ Thank you for coming along on this journey with me. I can’t wait to share the next chapter from Victoria Falls! Have you ever been somewhere that completely surprised you? I’d love to hear where it was!

@Ina Tenniswood Did you happen to run across the lost Fahcawi tribe while you were there? I do not know much about them but on my last visit there seemed toi be a lot of interest. People would be looking around at the spectacular scenery and say, "Where the Fahcawi?"
