I spent years training consistently, eating reasonably well, and still looked soft in the mirror. Tried bulking, tried cutting, tried more cardio. None of it worked the way it was supposed to because I was using approaches built for a completely different body type. Eventually I figured out what actually works for ectomorphs dealing with the skinny-fat problem specifically — got to under 15% body fat and built the SFS Method around that process.
