A common atheist argument says the resurrection accounts cannot be trusted because they were written tens or even hundreds of years after Jesus lived. The suggestion is that enough time passed for the story of an ordinary teacher to grow into the story of a risen Savior. But that timeline does not hold up. Paul wrote about the resurrection within roughly 20 years of the crucifixion. The testimony he preserved in 1 Corinthians 15 is commonly traced to within just a few years of Jesus’ death. It names specific witnesses and says many were still alive, allowing the claim to be investigated. The Gospels were also written in the first century, within living memory of the events. The resurrection was not added to Christianity centuries later. It was the message Christians proclaimed from the very beginning. An atheist may reject that testimony, but claiming it was invented hundreds of years afterward ignores the actual historical timeline.
