Resource Drop ๐Ÿช‚
This week's free resource is up for you guys.
It's all about STOPP - a method that we can use in times of distress or in adverse situations outdoors. As always, there are links to both.
This technique gives us a chance to pause, take a moment to observe and gain perspective on the situation before making a more informed and rational approach. Giving the part of our brain that perceives threat, the opportunity to allow our prefrontal cortex to rationalise what is going on.
Example: We're out on a multi-day expedition, we've lost track of where we are, light is going quick, weather is coming in and now panic starts to creep in.
Stop - Take a knee, take on some water & sugar then get the map out.
Take a breathe - This calms the nervous system passing our threat response onto our rational brain.
Observe: Notice how you are feeling and take time to go through the feeling. It will pass. Then observe your surroundings, the map and features in the land to attempt to make sense of it.
Pull back- Put in some perspective, what is actually going on, what could you do to help yourself in this situation? Maybe you need to set up camp, maybe you need to head back to the last known location. Look at the bigger picture.
Practise what works - Make a plan, based on your experience, the current situation and your skillset and choose the best option for the situation.
I hope this helps folks, it's been a great tool in the past for me and if it helps any of you out, do let me know in the comments. I am keen for feedback ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ
