Enjoy things while they last
This text is primarily for myself. Although, if you find yourself being able to apply some of my thoughts for yourself, feel free to do so :)
Here is a small overview of my text:
  • My current situation and experiences
  • How time distorts our unconscious behaviour for things
  • Get active!
------ My current situation and experiences ------
In the recent weeks, I lost 2 very important personalities in my life.
The first one was my grandmother. She had such a big heart and was so lovely, every time, when I got to know another lovely person, I assessed them with the question "How much percent lovely of my grandmother is he/she?" Nobody could reach my grandma in the lovely scale. She really was the most lovely person I knew.
The second death was my dog (just about 5 days ago).
I grew up with him, he basically was a brother to me. A brother that never said something mean or bad or ragebaiting (like my human brother did), just one, that is happy EVERYTIME he sees you and gets up to say "Hello, welcome back" in a proper way (no human would ever do that when living for 13,5 years with you).
Soooo yeah... They meant something to me, as you can see. You have no idea how hard I would hug my dog if he was still with me or how hard I would hit that call button to call my grandma, if I still had the chance to.
So my message is:
ENJOY THINGS WHILE THEY LAST
I could probably stop right here, but now comes the nerdy part hehehe:
This is a phrase, that we actually hear very often. In fact, so often, that we don't even really think about it anymore and just go on. So basically, we hear it *too* often.
----- How time distorts our unconscious behavior for things -----
I thought myself: "If I knew back in time, that my dog or my gradma will soon be gone forever, how would I have acted?"
Obviously differently, right? What does that tell me?
--> If we know, that a ressource is limited/scarce, we value it more.
And it makes sense. That's human nature. Right now you wouldn't waste a single cent on a breath of air, but how much are you willing to pay for one litre of air, if you were on Mars? Probably a lot more, right?
As soon as the human mind sees something as limited, it's worth more to the human mind's perception.
Drawn, it would look something like this:
Ressource scarcity --> How we see the ressource --> How we behave around it.
As you understand the concept above now, here's the "plot": TIME IS A RESSOURCE AS WELL!
The problem with many things related to to this precious ressource "time" is, that our perception of it often is extremely distorted and therfore how we value it, is distorted as well.
Only if we see an end of [time with x], we're able to see the the scarcity of the [time with x] and therfore value the time more
And if we don't see an end coming, then we will value the time, the situation, whatever, way less.
That's the explanation of why I acted the way I did to my dog last week, when he was still alive: as usual. I didn't recognise the scarcity of the time I had left with him.
------- Get active -------
So, what do we do now with that piece of information? How can we use it for our day-to-day lives?
Well, visualize that YOUR TIME WITH LITERALLY ANYTHING IS NOT LIMITLESS.
My girlfriend likes to say: "There is always a first time for everything". Yes, she's right. But have you ever realised, that there is always a last time for everything as well?
YOU 100% WILL:
  • Not live with your parents your whole lifetime
  • Not spend time with you loved ones forever
  • Not do something you love for eternity
  • Not be able to enjoy a good meal for eternity
  • Enjoy a last sunset in your life
  • Go to a the gym for thr last time
  • ....
Yeah I know, it sounds depressing.
(Btw that's why your time is worth so much, but that's an other topic I won't go into right now😅.)
I could go on, but you get the point:
Enjoy the things,.......
..... while they still last.
"So Dave, you unbelievably wise man and perceptionist of time", says nobody ever, "How can I enjoy the things while they still last?"
"Well, my fellow companion", I say while still playing with my long, white beard, "Get active!"
Jokes aside, that IS where the key to enjoying a thing at its fullest is.
Thinking actively about that there IS a last time and time IS, in fact, limited.
(This goes once again into the thing we discussed over the several last weeks: actively think about things, not passively. This time, it is just not active decision making but just active thinking and actively being in the moment.)
I could go on talking about time, but I'll leave it for now.
Thank you, my fellow perceptionist of time, for your time (you hopefully actively decided to spend on this text) and your attention :)
