The benefits of not drinking alcohol
One very difficult topic I have faced over the last few years as an adult is my decision to abstain from alcohol and be 100% alcohol free.. Many people do not understand not agree with it and always say they could never do it themselves. I was one of those people once upon a time. I loved a drink, and would find any excuse under the sun to drink.. Everything was centred around the next big party. Unfortunately over the years alcohol lead me to making many poor decisions, affected my mental health severely, affected me financially, affected me in so many negative ways and I endured so many nasty hangovers and one day I just said no more!! To me being sober and living without the influence of a substance changing me and controlling me is worth so much.. The mental clarity, the waking up not sick and not overthinking events that took place, not having the endless what ifs and anxiety the next day or for weeks on end or even months on end after a big party or social event where alcohol was involved.. Do I judge other people who drink a lot, no I don't and it's a very easy trap to fall into.. I know from personal experience. Do I feel most adults would benefit greatly from not drinking or from atleast cutting down on their drinking, absolutely. Alcohol is a depressant, for anyone who suffers any type of mental illness, alcohol will exacerbate your illness.. Not only mentally but the physical effects of alcohol are immense. I know alcohol culture can be so engrained in us, usually starting in the teen years and progressing onwards. I know it's just so easily accepted by society and promoted by society but at the end of the day anything that alters your usual way of being, thinking, acting is a drug and alcohol is a drug.. I've seen many good people and families ripped apart by the devastating effects of alcoholism.. It's not pretty.
