To be honest, I didn't go out with a deep concept in mind. I was just out shooting, playing with my camera and experimenting with the settings. It wasn't until I got home and started the editing process that this shot jumped out at me.
Looking at it after the fact, I realized it’s a perfect example of how we actually live right now. There’s this invisible wall between us and the real world because of our phones. I didn't plan to capture 'digital addiction,' but the camera caught what I didn't see in the moment: a person completely removed from a world that is literally blurring past them.
The Focus:
Since the assignment is about making an image work without color, I focused on how the lack of detail actually tells the story better:
- The Silhouette: I kept the subject almost entirely black. Without seeing his face or clothes, he becomes a symbol for anyone lost in a screen.
- The Rim Light: The only thing separating him from the dark is that sliver of light on his profile. It acts like a literal border between him and the street.
- Shutter Speed (1/8 sec): Since I was just playing with settings, the slow shutter ended up being the secret sauce. It turned the real world into a ghostly blur, making the subject look like he's standing in a different dimension than the people behind him.
Technical Details:
- Settings: 35mm | $f/1.8$ | 1/8 sec | ISO 200
- Edit: I just bumped the exposure by +0.88 stops and turned it into a B&W photo.
