Why We Write P.S.
Did you know…
P.S. comes from the Latin phrase post scriptum, meaning "written after."
Before emails and editing buttons, once a letter had been signed and folded, there wasn't an easy way to go back and add another paragraph.
So if the writer suddenly remembered one last thought, secret, or important detail, they'd add it at the end with:
P.S.
Some letters even had:
P.P.S. (post-post scriptum)
and occasionally
P.P.P.S.!
Historians have found that the P.S. was often the most personal part of the letter—the little thing the writer almost forgot to say.
