Are We Being Selfless or Selfish?
Interested to get your opinion on this Dr Heath.
Personally, I believe we are here to do for others and when I say that, I don’t mean at the exclusion of ourselves, but in doing an act of kindness, are we doing it for the recipient or for self satisfaction?
If it’s for the simple reason we want accolades, of course it loses all meaning. But for example, say I decide to buy a meal for a homeless person because I know they need it. I go to the store excitedly and it makes my day to think I will help someone. So we are both benefiting from this which I think is ok but I know there are actually thoughts on it being selfish because I’m giving myself satisfaction. My belief is if I shout it from the rooftops, it’s selfish but if I keep it between me and the recipient, it does have meaning. What would be the alternative anyway? Maybe it’s a psychological study that has no merit. Just wanted to see what you think.
