The first thing you should do whenever handling a firearm is to ensure that it is always done so in a safe manner. To do this we use the acronym A.C.T.S. A - Always assume a firearm is loaded C - Control the muzzle direction at all times T - Trigger finger must always be clear of the trigger / trigger guard at all times S - See that the firearm is unloaded By following these steps you will virtually eliminate the risk of accidental discharge. In order to make sure a firearm is unloaded, following the acronym P.R.O.V.E. will ensure that you don't miss a step! P - Point muzzle in a safe direction R - Remove the magazine (if you can) O - Observe the chamber V - Verify the feeding path is clear E - Examine the bore (Use a cleaning rod / camera / bore snake) By memorizing this acronym it will ensure that you don't miss a step in ensuring a firearm is unloaded in a safe manner.
