Issue with Fabric Lakehouse file system access via SQL Server External Tables

I am wondering if anyone experienced this. In order to avoid moving files to our on-prem SQL Server warehouse, we are trying to use an External Table to point to the files on the lakehouse (Fabric). We tried all possible combinations (using adls prefix and abfs, https), but none of the fabric links to the ADLS Gen2 storage are working. I am wondering if this is even possible. I can't find a direct post on the microsoft anywhere stating this is not possible. Therefore, any help/suggestion/advice here is greatly appreciated! Many thanks!
