Hey guys and gyals.
So when people talk about mixing in expensive headphones or in a treated room, the quality we hear is way better in regards to mixing. Flatter responses etc.
But is that just for a comfort and time thing? I ask as I’ve been wondering if I’m flogging a dead horse trying to improve my mixes.
My set up consists of Beyerdynamic DT 770 80ohm headphones, these are also closed back to add to the dilemma. I got these before I knew anything about headphones but they seem to be ok to me. But I have nothing to really compare with.
My room has the smallest amount of acoustic treatment, which is a few foam squares on one of my walls. And a ton of things inside to make up for absorption. I live in shared accommodation so my life is in my room.
And my monitors are KRK 7 G4s.
Am I to believe it’s impossible to get a mix worthy of sounding up there with the best of them with this setup?
Also my main question was going to be, if my headphones playback bass for example that I presume to be a little coloured, wouldn’t that simply mean not being too aggressive with it? Or at least be as aggressive as I think it sounds just right, then turn it down a little as I know my headphones are upping it a little?
I ask because people always mention only mixing in good headphones that are open back. But I mean, that’s just for best experience right? I can still make exceptional sounding music with my setup right?
This one gets me so disheartened and I think is preventing me from releasing any music! I don’t have the funds to upgrade to better equipment, and I don’t want to stop learning. I just Ben feel I’m ready to just make a start, but then I hear all the comments about not being able to get good mixes in an untreated room or using low end costing headphones. I absolutely loved my DT 700s until I started reading up on all the nuances. I still love them, but feel I shouldn’t!
