Local client first on Upwork or direct proposals?
Local client first on Upwork or direct proposals?
Here’s my point of view 👇
I believe that only sending bids on Upwork at the beginning is not always the best approach. Instead, if possible, a beginner should first try to find one or two genuine clients (local or through Instagram outreach, communities, etc.) who are willing to work on Upwork.
Getting 1–2 real reviews and ratings can make your profile look more trustworthy, which helps when you start bidding later. The key point: the client must be real — no fake jobs, no shortcuts, and no cheating.
I think this is a better starting approach for many beginners.
Another important thing: outreach your skills everywhere. Be active in relevant Upwork and tech communities where your potential clients are already present.
In my next post, I’ll share my personal experience of how I made $1000 just by posting in communities, and how that client is now working with me on Upwork — Alhamdulillah.
This is just my perspective. What do you think is the best practice for beginners on Upwork?
