A detailed walkthrough of the only Hajj performed by our beloved Prophet ﷺ
How it all began
In 9 Hijri, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq R.A. led the first Muslim caravan for Hajj. Then in 10 Hijri, Allah ﷻ gave the command to His Prophet ﷺ - and this became the one and only Hajj of Rasulullah ﷺ, known as Hajjat ul Wida (the Farewell Pilgrimage).
9 Hijri aur 10 Hijri - yeh do alag saal hain, jaise hum kehte hain 2024 aur 2025.
Yani:
- 9 Hijri (poora ek saal) - Hazrat Abu Bakr R.A. gaye
- Agle saal yaani 10 Hijri mein - Prophet ﷺ ko Allah ka hukm mila
2: Key Dates of Hajj:
The important days of Zil Hajj
8 Zil Hajj: Tarveeha - The day of watering camels before the journey to Mina
9 Zil Hajj: Arafat - The greatest day of Hajj; pilgrims stand on the plains of Arafat
10 Zil Hajj: Yawm ul Nahar / Eid ul Adha - The day of Qurbani
11, 12, 13 Zil HajjAyyam ul Tashreeq - The days of Rami (stoning the Jamarat - symbolically pelting Shaytan)
Story of the Jamarat:
Why do we stone the three Jamarat?
The Jamarat commemorate the test of Hazrat Ibrahim A.S. When Allah ﷻ commanded him to sacrifice his most beloved - his own son - Shaytan appeared at three different locations, taking different forms each time, trying to mislead and discourage Hazrat Ibrahim A.S.
Each time Shaytan approached, Hazrat Ibrahim A.S. drove him away by throwing stones. The three spots where this happened are now the three Jamarat. At the third and final Jamarat, Hazrat Ibrahim A.S. was fully prepared to carry out Allah's command - and Allah ﷻ replaced his son with a dumba to be sacrificed in his place.
(This is why pilgrims stone the Jamarat on 11th, 12th, and 13th Zil Hajj - to revive the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim A.S. and symbolically reject Shaytan.)
The Journey - Day by Day:
From
Madinah to Makkah

Note:
Three types of Hajj
- Ifrad - Only Hajj, without Umrah
- Qiran - Hajj and Umrah combined in one Ihram
- Tamattu - Umrah first, then new Ihram for Hajj (most common today)
9 Zil Hajj - Yawm ul Arafat (Friday)
On this day, the Prophet ﷺ performed Qurbani (sacrifice). His blessed wives - all 9 - had accompanied him on this journey.
The Prophet ﷺ then had his hair shaved (halq). This was done by the blessed companion Hazrat Muammar bin Abdullah R.A., who was always the one to shave the Prophet's ﷺ hair.
The hair from the right side of the Prophet's ﷺ blessed head was distributed among the companions. The hair from the left side was given to Hazrat Talha bin Abi Talha R.A.
A heartwarming story - shared by Sir Asim Irfan
Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed R.A.
and
the blessed hair
You've heard the name of Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed R.A. - the great general of Islam, whose sword was named Saifullah (Sword of Allah). Here's a lesser-known story about his love for the Prophet ﷺ.
Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed R.A. knew that the blessed hair from the Prophet's ﷺ left side had been given to Hazrat Talha bin Abi Talha R.A. So he cultivated a close and genuine friendship with him.
Once their bond was strong, he said to Hazrat Talha R.A.:
"There is one thing I wish to ask of you..."
Hazrat Talha R.A. replied, "Tell me, what is it?"
Hazrat Khalid R.A. said, "Give me a few strands of the Prophet's ﷺ blessed hair."
Hazrat Talha R.A. gave them to him without hesitation.
What did Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed R.A. do with those blessed hairs? He had them sewn into the inside of his battle helmet - so that every time he went to war, those sacred strands would be with him, close to his head, giving him barakah.
SubhanAllah - this was the depth of Sahaba's love (ishq) for our Prophet ﷺ.
11 Zil Hajj (Sunday)
A surah revealed
On the 11th of Zil Hajj, Surah Al-Ma'idah was revealed. This is among the last Surahs to be revealed to the Prophet ﷺ.
