Rise or Raise?
This question came up in class today. What's the difference between rise and raise? This is why I love this job... I couldn't answer in a concise way. I had to check! So, here it is... Rise (Intransitive): No direct object is needed. Examples: The bread is rising. The curtain rose. Prices have risen. Pronunciation: "ryz" (like "eyes") Raise (Transitive): A direct object is required (you raise something). Examples: Raise your hand. They raised the roof. She raised a family. Pronunciation: "raiz" (like "days") Teacher Tip: If you cannot explain in a short and simple way, don't be too proud to check before speaking. Always keep instructions clear.

Paparazzi, Paparazzo, and Paparazza
In a lesson today, I noticed the word 'Paparazza'. I knew 'Paparazzi' but 'Paparazza' was new to me... a quick Google and now I understand: - Paparazzo: Singular, masculine (one male photographer). - Paparazza: Singular, feminine (one female photographer). - Paparazzi: Plural (multiple photographers). Usage: Paparazzi is far more common in English-speaking media to describe a group. Did YOU know this?

WIN or BEAT?
This came up in a lesson today. I helped a student understand... WIN - you win a game, match, trophy, or prize (focusing on the achievement) - I hope we win the game. - We are winning the game! - YAY! We won the game! BEAT - you beat an opponent or team (focusing on the person/team you defeated) - We can beat the other team. - We are beating them! - YAY! We beat them From these examples, you will see that both verbs are IRREGULAR verbs: win > winning > won [past participle: won] beat > beating > beat [past participle: beaten]
