Rise or Raise?
This question came up in class today. What's the difference between rise and raise?
This is why I love this job... I couldn't answer in a concise way. I had to check! So, here it is...
Rise (Intransitive): No direct object is needed.
Examples: The bread is rising. The curtain rose. Prices have risen.
Pronunciation: "ryz" (like "eyes")
Raise (Transitive): A direct object is required (you raise something).
Examples: Raise your hand. They raised the roof. She raised a family.
Pronunciation: "raiz" (like "days")
Teacher Tip: If you cannot explain in a short and simple way, don't be too proud to check before speaking. Always keep instructions clear.
