"Chicken leg" boy ver.2
Synopsis/Proposal/Abstract:
"Hello, I am XXX and from a rural area in China..." That was a bloody hot summer, when I towed a blue luggage from the airport to the homestay in Morley. That was a cloudy Sunday afternoon. I took the bus, trying to go back home, while finishing a mixing track from CR3 in the meantime. Getting off the bus and passing a KFC when I felt hungry. Walking straight away to the KFC shop and coming up to the counter. "Hey, sir, what can I get for you?" "Can I please grab a chicken leg?" At the same time, my finger points to my lower leg…
Creative Writing/Exegesis:
Until now, I still could not believe that it was true, and I did not understand how I had done those crazy study things. It was like a magic dream.
I am from a non-English-speaking country. But I achieved the final goal.
The image was still clear over time. It was about fifteen years ago and that was a Sunday afternoon after doing the mixing at CR2. I was so hungry on my way home and passed a KFC shop. I was thinking of getting some “chicken legs” to fill the energy.
I walked straight up to the cashier and said,” Can I please grab a chicken leg?” The cashier girl could not understand what I was requesting. After a few seconds, I pointed to my leg to indicate the meaning. She laughed at what I was saying and finally knew my order. She also repeated my order and it was a “drumstick”.
My English ability was quite limited back then. This is the reason I used a quotation mark at the beginning as an informal “drumstick” name. The report I wrote at the beginning of my music technology degree did not reach the standard academic level. The first year was a bad academic performance, and I failed Mimi’s unit. The second year was an unforgettable experience; I did five units in one semester timeframe, and an overseas student usually took four units as the standard level. I cannot speak a full sentence in English while presenting for the media culture unit.
But however, I remember Mimi’s lecture contents: connotation, denotation and ideology; the meaning behind the screen; the definition inside the image.
In addition, I did three degrees today; Bachelor, Graduate Diploma and Honours. Moreover, I worked overseas as an entertainment technician.
The outcome is about the experience and the inner. Something I have learnt from Oceania that was different from where I am from; it is not only about the English but more about culture, people and indigenous. Maybe this is the meaning of being an international student.
Have you ever said Chinese-English in overseas? What is the reaction on locals?
When you could confident to communicate with locals after you land in the countries?
How do you commute when heading to the school?
