Gym culture to me is confusing. Everyone’s different goals mean wildly different activities are done. My advice, figure out what your goals are first.
I think that it is important to be able to lift something heavy. Know what you want to be able to do.
My favorite advice is actually go a little lighter after you find your goal. Build up a base, learn the movements. There is time. And maybe try out the little weights a bit. They are way easier to move around…
