I thought I had found it. I wanted to coach on something that I knew, and I wanted to find a population that would not only benefit from my experience, but one that would also provide a lucrative business model.
My first thought was “Business Executives”. After all, they need what I have to teach, AND they generally have the financial wherewithal to pay for my coaching….Still, I didn’t feel quite connected to that world. I’ve never owned a business, apart from being a “sole proprietor” private practice psychotherapist for the past 35 years. I’ve certainly worked with (and coached) my share of “exec’s”, but something about that population was missing for me…As I was driving home from seeing friends this afternoon, it dawned on me. The question I asked myself was “what group of people do I know the best?” The answer immediately came to mind. In my earlier years, I was a Los Angeles Police Officer, and then Police Sergeant. I had to leave that line of work due to serious injuries I received on the job. But it’s a career that, although you leave IT, it never leaves YOU. I’ve had countless individual cops I’m my practice over the years, and provided Critical Incident Debriefing’s for many large police groups….i know them well. They afford me a level of trust, due to my experience.
Bingo! My Niche is Police Departments (both domestic and international), coaching/ teaching their employees what I’ve ALWAYS taught!
The take away here…Be Connected to Who and How you want to Coach.
It took me a while, and some introspection, but it came to me…it will come to you.
