Coaching Script: Using the Four Noble Truths
Objective: To help clients understand and overcome limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviours by applying the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism.
Introduction
Coach: "Welcome! Today, we will explore a profound and transformative approach to addressing and overcoming limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviours. We will use the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism as a framework for our session. Are you ready to begin?"
Step 1: The First Noble Truth - The Truth of Suffering (Dukkha)
Coach: "The First Noble Truth is the recognition that suffering exists. In our context, this means acknowledging the pain and difficulties caused by your limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviours. Let's start by identifying these issues."
Questions to ask:
  1. "What are some recurring negative thoughts or beliefs you have about yourself?"
  2. "How do these beliefs impact your actions and decisions?"
  3. "Can you describe specific situations where you felt held back or sabotaged by these thoughts?"
Coach: "By recognising and acknowledging these issues, we take the first step towards addressing them."
Step 2: The Second Noble Truth - The Cause of Suffering (Samudaya)
Coach: "The Second Noble Truth teaches us that there is a cause for suffering. In many cases, our limiting beliefs stem from past experiences, fears, or misconceptions. Let's explore the root causes of your limiting beliefs."
Questions to ask:
  1. "Can you recall any specific events or experiences that contributed to these beliefs?"
  2. "What fears or insecurities are linked to these beliefs?"
  3. "How do you think these beliefs have been reinforced over time?"
Coach: "Understanding the origins of these beliefs can help us dismantle their power over you."
Step 3: The Third Noble Truth - The End of Suffering (Nirodha)
Coach: "The Third Noble Truth is the realisation that suffering can end. This means that you have the power to change your beliefs and behaviours. Let's envision a future where these limiting beliefs no longer control you."
Questions to ask:
  1. "How would your life change if you no longer believed these limiting thoughts?"
  2. "What positive actions and behaviours would replace the self-sabotaging ones?"
  3. "What strengths and qualities do you possess that can help you overcome these beliefs?"
Coach: "By visualising, feeling hearing a life free from these limitations, you empower yourself to make it a reality."
Step 4: The Fourth Noble Truth - The Path to the End of Suffering (Magga)
Coach: "The Fourth Noble Truth outlines the path to overcoming suffering, often referred to as the Eightfold Path. In our session, we'll focus on practical steps you can take to change your beliefs and behaviours."
Questions to ask:
  1. "What small, actionable steps can you take to challenge and change these limiting beliefs?"
  2. "Who can support you in this journey of transformation?"
  3. "What daily practices or affirmations can reinforce your new, positive beliefs?"
Coach: "Let's create a plan together that incorporates these steps and supports your journey towards freedom from limiting beliefs."
Conclusion
Coach: "Today, we've used the Four Noble Truths to understand and address your limiting beliefs. Remember, acknowledging suffering, understanding its causes, envisioning its end, and following a practical path are key steps towards transformation. How do you feel about the insights and plan we've developed?"
Follow-Up Plan

  2. Adjust Plan: Make adjustments to the action plan as needed based on the client's experiences and feedback.
  3. Encourage Reflection: Encourage the client to keep a journal to reflect on their thoughts, actions, and progress.
  4. Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate the client's successes, no matter how small, to build confidence and motivation.
