One of the kindest things a carer can do for themselves is to join a room where they don’t have to explain the weight they carry 🙏 Last week I attended our local Carer Support Meeting, and I was reminded how powerful it is to sit in a room with people who get it. The group is run by a Social Worker from the Dementia Advisory Service, part of our Local Health District. We meet once a month — sometimes there is a guest speaker, other times it’s an open discussion where carers can ask questions, share stories, or talk through situations that need advice or support. Every time I go, I leave feeling lighter. Not because the challenges disappear, but because I’ve spent time with others who understand the emotional, practical, and mental load of caring for ageing parents or ageing partners. Many of these parents and partners have Dementia or other cognitive issues. If you are a carer, or know someone who is, I can’t recommend this enough — search your local area for a Carer Support Group. It’s one of the most valuable things you can do for yourself and the people you care for. We don’t have to do this alone. There’s real strength in community — and sometimes, just being heard is the best kind of help 🌸 To find local Carer Support Meetings go to the Carer Gateway Website - Peer support groups for carers | Carer Gateway
