FAQ- Claude Code install GIT
Hey Jam Fam! Is anyone stuck with Claude Code install? I talked with three people in the past week that thought "install GIT" to use Claude Code desktop meant "Github".
Git is not GitHub. Git is a free tool that lives on your computer. Think of it as a time machine for your files. It quietly tracks every change Claude makes, so if something breaks, you can roll back to the version that worked. That's it.
Why does Claude want it? Because Claude is careful. Before it edits anything, it wants a safety net so nothing gets lost. Honestly, this is a green flag, not a red one. It also unlocks fun stuff, like telling Claude "save my changes with a note about what we did" and it just handles it.
Is it safe? Yes. Git is the most trusted developer tool in the world. Every professional programmer on the planet has it installed. No malware, no account required, no cost.
How to fix the popup:
๐ŸŽ Mac: When the popup asks to install "Command Line Developer Tools," just click Install. Your Mac sets up Git for you automatically.
๐ŸชŸ Windows: Grab the standard installer from the official Git download page and click through with the default settings. Don't overthink the options, defaults are fine.
Then restart the Claude app so it sees that Git is there.
That's the whole thing. I hope this helps!
