Review of the Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn
πŸ‹ I finished this book a few days ago and loved it! The character of Christabel is wonderful, the writing is fantastic, and the whole idea of the whalebone theatre is so special!
Thanks, , for the recommendation!
It starts in the 1920s and runs through WWII. The parts about WWII were excellent, but not as magical as the beginning third or so when the main characters are children. Although there is a little romance, I do love the emphasis on sibling relationships throughout this novel.
The writing is enviably good β€” mostly in the use of perfect, imaginative metaphors. I love when a metaphor is utterly surprising but, when you read it, you feel that it's so 'true' that you should've already known it. There are also dashes of humour that made me smile, AND I shed a tear.
This is my favourite quote from the book: "War might depend on people who don't flinch, but humanity rather relies on those who do."
