How to let go of anxiety...
IMPACTFUL AND SATISFYING ANSWER BY THE BUDDHA... A young woman once asked the Buddha, "Blessed One, how can I let go of my anxiety?" The Buddha picked up a small clay cup and filled it with water. Then he began walking with it. After a few steps, some water spilled. The woman watched quietly. The Buddha asked, "Why did the water spill?" "Because you were moving," she replied. The Buddha smiled. "No." "The water spilled because there was water inside." The woman looked confused. The Buddha continued, "Life will always shake you." "There will be uncertainty." "There will be loss." "There will be criticism." "There will be things you cannot control." "The question is not whether life will shake you." "The question is: what are you carrying inside when it does?" The woman listened carefully. The Buddha continued, "When the mind is filled with fear of tomorrow..." "A small problem feels enormous." "A delayed message becomes rejection." "A mistake becomes disaster." "An uncertain future becomes a thousand imagined tragedies." The woman lowered her head. "That is exactly what happens to me." The Buddha nodded. "Anxiety is often the mind trying to live in a future that does not yet exist." "It keeps asking: 'What if this goes wrong?' 'What if I fail?' 'What if they leave?' 'What if I am not enough?'" Then the Buddha asked, "Tell me... How many of yesterday's worries actually happened exactly as you imagined?" The woman thought for a long moment. "Very few." The Buddha smiled. "Yet your mind demanded payment for all of them." The woman's eyes widened. The Buddha continued, "Anxiety is paying interest on a debt you may never owe." Silence filled the air. Then the Buddha said softly, "Return to this breath." "Return to this moment." "Return to what is real." "Because life is happening here." "Not in tomorrow's imagination." The woman bowed deeply. For the first time, she understood: Her anxiety wasn't coming from reality.
