Stress: The Quiet Danger
I was visiting my friend Carl yesterday. I have mentioned him in a post before. Carl is 58 and runs his own plumbing business. He has been married for 40 years, raised 3 kids. Now he has grand kids. He lost all his brothers in the last 5 years. His wife is pushing for a divorce, and there is friction with 2 of his kids.
The constant stress is wearing him down. He has many health problems. There is a sweet old couple who often walk the neighborhood. We were chatting with them when Carl asked their ages. He was about to tell them our ages but the woman stopped him and said, " Wait, let me guess.....I'm good at this. Carl, I would say you are 70, and Lee, probably 56." She was 10 years too young with me, and 12 years too many with Carl.
The biggest difference here is STRESS. My friend Carl is an example of the danger of stress and it's effect on health and aging. Carl talks about how he is looking forward to retiring in nine years. I get really quiet when he talks about that. I don't want to say what comes into my mind, and I don't want it in my mind.
Stress is a dangerous silent killer. It is the root cause of many diseases and makes almost any others worse. Removing stress from our lives is a top priority. We need to focus on that and do it by any and all means. By the time it starts to show on us, the damage is often already done. Let us all choose to find every way to reduce or eliminate this quiet danger.
