This is a Season of Earthing your Heart
How can I align my heart, mind, and ears to the Spirit’s voice?
In my recent article, Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Av, I wrote this about what it says in the book of Job: “ear discerns words”. When we have developed a sense of hearing both in the natural and spiritual, we gain the ability to discern and distinguish truth from falsehood."
In Hebrew, to HEAR means to FULLY COMPREHEND IN THE HEART AND NOT ONLY TO UNDERSTAND WITH THE MIND. This reflects the idea that spiritual hearing goes beyond physical listening - it means deeply comprehending with the heart.
Over the last 2 months, I kept seeing in the spirit a diamond/crystal earring in someone's ear. At first, I thought nothing of it. Then it happened again. So I asked the person if they ever had an earing. Silly me misspelled the word, but I looked it up anyway. This is what it said about "earing:"
Definition and Context
The term "earing" in the Bible refers to the act of plowing or tilling the ground in preparation for sowing seeds. It is an archaic term that appears in older translations of the Bible, such as the King James Version. In the context of agriculture, "earing" is a critical step in the cycle of planting and harvesting, symbolizing preparation and readiness for growth."
"In a broader spiritual sense, earing can symbolize the preparation of one's heart and life for receiving God's word and blessings. Just as the soil must be tilled to receive seed, individuals must prepare their hearts to receive spiritual truths. This metaphor is echoed in the parable of the sower, where the condition of the soil represents the readiness of the heart to accept the word (Matthew 13:3-9)."
"The practice of earing also had religious significance, as it was intertwined with the observance of the Sabbath and the acknowledgment of God's provision. The biblical injunctions regarding rest during plowing times served as a reminder of the Israelites' covenant relationship with God, who ultimately controlled the fertility of the land and the success of their labors."
"The act of earing, as part of the agricultural process, underscores the biblical themes of diligence, stewardship, and reliance on God's provision. It serves as a reminder of humanity's role in cultivating the earth and the necessity of preparing one's life for spiritual growth. The biblical injunctions related to earing and rest also highlight the importance of balancing work with spiritual observance, trusting in God's timing and provision."
Spiritually, earing symbolizes preparing the heart to receive truth, just as the soil must be broken up before it can receive seed.
HEARING AND EARING - THE CALL TO DISCERNMENT
Hearing and earing, two seemingly unrelated words, are in fact deeply connected. One speaks to the act of receiving, the other to the process of preparing. Together, they form a complete picture of what it means to live in a posture of spiritual readiness and discernment.
Often, these nudges come with a bit of a warning: be careful who has your ear. Not everyone we listen to speaks from a place of truth. Sometimes we allow voices, whether friends, influencers, or even our own inner critic, to color our perspective. Their opinions shape how we see others, how we see ourselves, and even how we see God. This can cloud our spiritual clarity. Be mindful of who has your ear. Sometimes, subtle influences can distort truth. This is a call to spiritual attentiveness, discernment, and readiness to receive only what aligns with God's voice. A call to a deeper level of hearing, not just consuming information or opinions, but truly discerning truth from falsehood, spirit from noise.
If you're feeling called into deeper discernment, you're not alone. This may be a season of earthing your heart, tilling it, softening it, preparing it. Be intentional about what and who you listen to. Guard your spiritual ear the way a farmer guards precious soil before planting season.
Let your hearing go beyond sound. Let it reach the heart.
And let your earing - not the one in your ear, but the one in your spirit - be a sign that your heart is being made ready for a new planting, a new word, a new move of God.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help discern:
What voices have had your ear lately? Are they drawing you closer to God’s truth or away from it?
Is there any “soil” in your heart that needs to be tilled, (attitudes, wounds, habits) areas where truth has a hard time taking root?
How can you be more intentional about preparing your heart to hear and discern what God is saying in this season?
What voices have I been listening to that may be shaping my view of truth?
How can I align my heart, mind, and ears to the Spirit’s voice?
Am I actively preparing for the new path God is leading me into?
