We need to use discernment and ask ourselves honest questions: “Why am I following this person?” “What am I getting from this relationship?”
A guru is someone who knows the way, walks the way, and shows the way. That is a simple way to understand it. Discernment comes from asking: “Does this person truly know the way?” If a guru does not welcome questions, I would be very cautious.
It’s not only about knowing the answers. Do they live the path? Do they follow what they teach? Is this person actually embodying their teachings? Are they showing up in the world in a way that reflects what they speak about?
A guru may observe the disciple, but the disciple must also observe the guru. How do they interact with each other? How do they face challenges? How do they respond in real situations? And most importantly, do they genuinely show the way?
What are they practically offering that can change my life? Try applying some of their instructions. Test them and see if they truly help.
When you approach your search in this way, things become more balanced—and you are far more likely to connect with an authentic teacher.
