I’ve been asking my customers what makes it worth paying for my high prices and the number one most common reason is the dogs always look great! A customer might not tell you if the groom was below their standards, but they will certainly let you know with their business. The customers that reschedule every 6 weeks will only do it if they are very happy with the quality of grooming and the experience they receive. High Quality is consistent! You have to deliver not just once or twice but every time you work with the animals. One bad experience can turn a customer away that would have paid you thousands of dollars over the next few years. ACTION STEP: • Keep it simple. Don’t skip any steps or forget to do any of the work. • Write down your current routine. See if anything is missing. If something often gets missed then find a spot in the groom to always do the task at that stage in the groom. Example: My most forgotten step was Ear Cleaning. I would do it some time after the bath because I knew the ear cleaner can help dry out any water that might have gotten in the ears. But that wasn’t specific enough for me to not forget it from time to time. I decided that it would be the last step once the head and ears were finished. I found that this would usually get the dogs to shake their head and I could see the last few hairs that were out of place and make the quality of my groom a little bit better. Now I have a permanent place for the task to never forget it and it helps make the haircut better too.

I used to be a dog groomer working at a 50% commission in a salon with so many other groomers. I was often helping others with their difficult dogs and ended up with the dogs on my schedule working harder on difficult dogs not getting near enough to compensate for it. My environment was pure chaos. All the dogs showed up at the same time and waited for hours, constantly picking up poop and pee. If I didn’t have an overbooked schedule I had no dogs at all for hours. I didn’t make enough money and those long days left me feeling burnt out. But then I started my own solo grooming business. I figured out a new way to run a pet salon. I got so many customers that I no longer had to answer the phone and always had dogs waiting to get on my schedule. Then I finally started to value my skills and experience enough to charge a premium rate. Now I love going to work and seeing my favorite dogs. I make over $10k per month working less than 35 hours a week. I have complete control over my schedule and my work environment. I finally have the steering wheel of my life in hand and I couldn’t be more grateful!
