*The "Genius" Finding a New Groove in Lisbon*
Jason Miles is a legendary American keyboardist, producer, and composer whose career has shaped the sound of modern jazz and R&B. Best known for his groundbreaking synthesizer programming on Miles Davis’s Grammy-winning album Tutu, Miles has been described by Davis himself as a "genius."
Over several decades, he has collaborated with a "who’s who" of music history, including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Luther Vandross. His own production work earned him a Grammy Award in 2000 for A Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins, featuring artists like Sting and Roberta Flack.
In 2023, Jason traded the fast-paced energy of New York City for the soul-stirring streets of Lisbon. This move has sparked a creative renaissance for the musician, who quickly integrated into the local scene. He formed the Lisbon Electric 4tet, a collaboration with some of Portugal’s finest musicians - Vicky Marques (drums), Yami Aloelela (bass), and Tiago Oliveira (guitar). Together, they have created what Jason calls a "Lisbon blend," a sophisticated fusion of New York jazz-funk and deep Portuguese groove that has become a staple of the local live music circuit.
Jason is set to perform in Lisbon and Cascais, where he not only plays but shares stories from his storied career with intimate audiences. As we head into late April 2026, he is actively celebrating the legacy of his mentor with his "100 Miles" project, honoring what would have been Miles Davis’s 100th year.
Read my interview with him in this week's Resident.
For Jason, Portugal is more than just a home; it is a collaborative playground where he continues to mentor independent artists and push the boundaries of contemporary music from his trans-Atlantic base.

*The "Midlife Awakener" in the Algarve*
Tova Leigh is an international sensation who transitioned from a career as an employment lawyer to become a leading voice in female empowerment and comedy. Born in Israel and later moving to the UK, she gained global recognition through her viral blog, 'My Thoughts About Stuff', and her candid online series, 'Mom Life Crisis', which was later adapted into a documentary on Amazon Prime. Her fearless exploration of "taboo" topics—from the realities of motherhood to menopause and female identity - has earned her over two million followers and established her as a best-selling author of titles like 'Fcked at 40' and 'Good Girls Gossip'.
Now living in Portugal, Tova has become a prominent figure in the local expat and creative community. Splitting her time between London and the Lisbon area, she has fully embraced the Portuguese lifestyle, noting in recent interviews how much she enjoys exploring the country's diverse regions. Her connection to the land goes beyond residence; she actively utilizes the Portuguese landscape as a backdrop for her work, hosting Female Empowerment Retreats in the Algarve and organizing the first all-female festival in Portugal, scheduled for May 2026.
As a performer, Tova is a force of nature, having completed multiple sell-out tours across the UK, US, and Europe. Her comedy is often described as "therapy through laughter," using sharp wit to advocate for gender equality and women's rights. Whether she is performing at her "Honey!" shows in Lisbon or leading immersive experiences for women in the south, Tova Leigh continues to "disturb the peace" professionally, proving that life after 40 is not a crisis, but a vibrant new chapter.
I will be interviewing Tova after the show for the Portugal Resident.

*The Digital Strategist Bringing "Calma" to Our Devices*
If you’ve ever felt like your smartphone is running your life rather than the other way around, Steven Shewach is the man you want to sit down with for a coffee. After nearly a decade as an "intentional nomad" - traveling through 65 countries and even trekking to Everest Base Camp - Steven eventually found his ultimate destination right here in Portugal. A self-described "Apple Product Guru" and Digital Life Strategist, he’s the founder of Digital Serenity, a service dedicated to helping people (especially those of us navigating midlife and beyond) turn their digital chaos into a streamlined, peaceful system.
Steven’s connection to Portugal is a classic tale of "nomad meets home". He didn't just move here; he fell in love here, marrying his Portuguese wife, Dora, and eventually becoming a Portuguese citizen himself. After years of exploring the globe, he chose to settle down and apply his deep technical expertise to a very human problem: the overwhelming "noise" of modern technology. From his base here, he works as a guide for those who feel left behind by the Genius Bar or overwhelmed by endless YouTube tutorials, offering what he calls a "judgment-free" path to digital organization.
On the show, Steven is the perfect voice to discuss the "Slowiness™" movement - his philosophy of unfolding business and life at a deliberate, manageable pace. Whether he’s helping a local expat organise a lifetime of digital photos or securing a retiree’s digital inheritance, Steven’s work is all about reclaiming time for what matters most: enjoying the real-world beauty of Portugal. He’s proof that you don’t have to be "bad with tech" - you just need a better system, and perhaps a bit of that famous Portuguese patience.
