Long-term dispatch assistance — is this normal?

Hi everyone! I'm just starting out in the dispatching business and currently working at an outsourcing company that cooperates with various carriers. Since the company hasn’t assigned me my own carrier yet, I’m assisting my colleagues by helping them find loads — and I’m doing it for free to gain experience.

They say this trial period might last 2–3 months. I’ve never worked in this field before, so I’m really curious:

1) Is this kind of unpaid assistance a normal practice in the industry?

2) Have any of you started your dispatching journey this way?

I’d love to hear how others got started and what your early experiences were like. Thanks in advance!
