๐Ÿ‚ Second Spring โ€“ Day 2 Refresh Your Containers Without Starting Over
Yesterday we talked about why August is the beginning of Second Spring for container gardeners.
Today, let's get our containers ready for their next season.
Here's some good news...
Unless your plants suffered from serious diseases or your potting mix has completely broken down, you can often refresh it and have it ready for another round of growing.
Start by removing plants that have finished producing or are past their prime.
As you pull them out:
๐Ÿ… Remove as much of the root ball as you can.
๐Ÿ‚ Pick out fallen leaves and plant debris.
๐ŸŒฟ Pull any weeds that have sneaked into the pot.
Healthy plant material can go into your compost pile. If a plant struggled with disease, it's better to throw it away rather than composting it.
Over the summer, watering naturally compacts potting mix.
Use a hand trowel or small hand cultivator to gently loosen the top 3โ€“4 inches of soil.
You're giving those future roots room to breathe!
Most containers have settled several inches by August.
Top them off with fresh, high-quality potting mix.
This adds fresh organic matter, improves drainage, and gives new seedlings a great place to establish their roots.
A couple of inches is often all it takes to make a big difference.
Remember...
You're not just feeding your plants.
You're feeding the soil that feeds your plants.
Mix in one of these before planting:
๐ŸŒฟ Slow-release fertilizer
๐ŸŒฟ Compost
๐ŸŒฟ Worm castings
๐ŸŒฟ Organic container fertilizer
Your fall vegetables and flowers will thank you.
Water your refreshed container thoroughly before planting.
Moist soil helps seeds germinate more evenly and reduces transplant shock if you're planting seedlings.
โŒ Reusing soil from diseased plants.
โŒ Filling containers with heavy garden soil.
โŒ Forgetting to replenish nutrients after a busy summer.
โŒ Leaving the soil packed and compacted.
A little preparation now can make a huge difference in how your fall garden performs.
๐ŸŒผ ๐๐ซ๐จ ๐“๐ข๐ฉ
If a container held a heavy feeder like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, or squash all summer, consider planting something lighter-feeding next like lettuce, spinach, herbs, or radishes.
Giving your containers a change of pace can help keep the soil healthier and your next crop happier.
Refresh one container today.
That's it!
You don't have to tackle your entire patio in one afternoon.
Start with one pot, and you'll be surprised how quickly the rest begin to follow.
๐Ÿ“ธ We'd love to see your "before and after" photos in the comments!
What's the oldest container in your garden?
Is there one pot you've been growing in for years? Tell us its story! Some of our favorite containers are the ones with a little history behind them.
Healthy plants begin with healthy soil.
A 15-minute soil refresh today can reward you with weeks of fresh vegetables, herbs, and flowers this fall.
