Late introduction and my latest mix :) (and master)
EDIT July 1st: New master version of a new mix version in the comments. Feedback wanted :)
EDIT: Master in the comments.
Hi all! I joined last November, actually making music since 2009, but still failed to go through with all the "lessons" learned from FTM in my work (trying it once the pretty much the way it was taught), but adopted more and more into my workflow. What I want to share is closest to what FTM approach "asked of us", final mix candidate without any spacial FX added (except for DubStation 2 on the drum machine plugin's Master FX bus, which already was set to some sort of simple delay). I'm not sure if I'll continue applying some short/long reverb and maybe more delays to single channel sends, I usually (not always anyway) used premaster send reverb (often Perfect Room) or used a little reverb in RC-20 Colors or something on master before.
This is probably my cleanest and most nuance-automated mix so far (I usually left some imperfections that I later addressed in mastering before), also the first time I used clipping the way taught in FTM. 3 days of mixing work so far. I didn't (except for a couple of tracks) used volume automation and no clip gain work at all, but automated many FX, also the first time I used (Kirchhoff) EQ on every track, mostly for cutting and shelving, but also doing many things dynamic. I used the 294-520 Hz band of the organ to form a distinctly sounding bass part, formed with Neutron 4 Transient Shaper, 2 Neutron 4 Exciters, and 2 different multiband compressors, one of which was Waves H-Comp inside StudioRack's frequency band.
What could you say about this mix? Any suggestions? I feel that something is still not right, maybe in the last half or third where more synth layers come in, there's something wrong about their dynamic EQ settings? Gonna revisit that thought tomorrow.
P.S. Not sure if it's "placebo paranoia", but I had to re-export the audio to FLAC to meet the Skool's space requirements and I think that there might be very slight nuance changes compared to the 32-bit original. But whatever :)
P.P.S. I always fail to choose reference tracks, as my music usually feels "too different" to find some that make sense. This time again, I'm not sure what to choose for mastering reference.
P.P.P.S. Regarding my room, I do want to start a different post, but am not sure about when I'll have time for it, as I also wanted to measure and to make some pictures (difficult room situation) and would like to tidy and clean up a bit first :)
