Fix-The-Mix Orchestral Edition
Not long ago, I posted on our YouTube channel asking what people wanted to see from Mastering.com The most liked comment? "Orchestral mixing mastering" And it's finally happening. Next week, we're hosting a special edition of our famous "Fix-The-Mix" Challenge, focusing on music with orchestration. We're partnering with Orchestral Tools to bring you three days of live mixing, where Kevin "Black Pearl" McCloskey will be mixing a track with orchestral components from start to finish. We'll also breakdown the composition itself at the start of day one (composed by our very own Luke Despain). RSVP for free here (starts Sep 15th): https://courses.mastering.com/events/e/fix-the-mix-sep-2026?utm_source=Skool See you there, Rob

@Luke Despain Really loved the track and working with it, Luke.

Hmmh, I did already upload it in my own topic and went to bed for some time... Export time - shortly before 12 AM Pacific. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ay8a5emYglekQ4mXXUKtCc2cb-WzIkqW/view?usp=sharing Here's the topic I posted it in: https://www.skool.com/mastering/missed-the-ftm-deadline-would-love-feedback-though
Missed the FTM deadline. Would love feedback, though
Hey guys, long time no speak. I went through some rabbit holes to finish the mix and master, and I lost a lot of time fighting with my PC (performance problems) and a Cubase export-and-reimport bug. I did most of the work on busses, though some more mixing work would have saved me a lot of time. Also, if my friend didn't visit me for two hours, I might have had finished in time anyway. I do hear some unresolved problems mostly caused by premature exporting sub-tracks with plugins and my lack of wishing to go back to adjust and re-export. You might notice that on the piano volume automation. Anyway, would love your feedback to my mix and master of @Luke Despain - "Birth of entropy". Might come back later to finish it the proper way.

Hey there Petter! Thank you for your feedback! Not sure about the BPM, I was pretty sure I did everything right. I think it's different dynamics compared what you're used to hear; I think, if the sample rate didn't convert right, it should be too fast and not slower (I'm using 44.1k). Yes, you're right about the limiter, it was the final adjustment to find the sweet spot and for the real sweet spot there should've been some slight volume automation. A little before 9 AM German time I told my self "nah, no more". I thought deadline was 12 AM Pacific anyway. The piano I fought with a lot, I wanted to try smart:chain on it, to figure if I would consider getting it (not really a fan of it so far, used it on 3 tracks total here). It over-exaggerated a honky resonance in this piano and with my volume automation, it got to the max volume too fast and a couple of slightly nasty "piano honks" are there. There are a lot of adjustments in Kirchhoff on it, post-bounce. As for the "drone type sound", I really liked it, just a tiny bit overlimited at couple of spots, I guess. Maybe a tiny bit of compression would save it instead of volume automation or dialing back limiter threshold.
What could be the reason for this paralysis?
Weird… It’s what you love to do… and you have many ideas….. but you’re not opening your DAW and your projects are not moving forward. What could be the reason for such paralysis? There’s obviously some resistance when the mind is avoiding it. How do/did you get out of this?

For me, a huge "excuse-killer" would be to be able to afford a really good computer, dedicated solely to production (and maybe also video editing for uploads). Usually, I get up and feel pretty hungover (doesn't really matter if I had alcohol last night (and how much of it) or any additional medication), start my day by checking mail and surfing, usually non-production-related stuff, drink coffee, and "wake up" hours later with the thought "damn, I wanted to work on music today, but after all that coffee and war-related "doom-scrolling" I feel uneasy enough to say, I am now too overwhelmed to start. And to start I need to close my browsers, mail client and everything else, reboot and close some auto-starting apps and stop some services in Windows (one service, actually, but not so important). Often there might be something really huge I started downloading some time ago and can't wait to finish, some backup integrity checks that might be running since the previous night, etc., that makes me wait longer even if I'd otherwise really reboot and start right now. An important problem, not related to that, is that I hate my flat, and most of the year between about 7 AM and almost 12 PM the sun shines so bright into my living-room window that I can't read or recognize almost anything on my left display and it's often way harder to read on the main one (they are angled towards each other and stand on the angled-standing desk very close behind my sloped window). So, if I would be more insistent and repeat at least once a week to my brother that I really need his help to move that damn desk, which I first said to him many years ago, the situation would improve a lot without any additional investment. Another (additionally helping) way would be to stop being a "tab maniac" that knows no real match to himself, but I suspect that quitting tobacco for good, which I stopped trying years ago, would be a much easier endeavor.
Newest production-in-progress ("broke")
EDIT: 2 different final masters in this comment: https://www.skool.com/fix-the-mix-challenge-2089/newest-production-in-progress-broke?p=562fceeb I felt in a rut lately, not working on mixes or productions, my last production which I yet have to mix was made in February. I couldn't finish mix and master work I worked on last because of gaps in knowledge and getting fed up. I noticed problems with my headphones while training on Soundgym lately and I want to get OLLO Audio X1 in January, but what sense makes all the training and "collecting" gear if one doesn't work on projects anymore? I felt the need to create a new track, and today I started to work on the latest Cymatics contest, I was pretty angry because of private circumstances not worth mentioning here and so far only worked on pack loops (and some other drum loops from my library), creating a foundation, only very little editing done and tuning by Loopcloud. I'm not yet sure what to do add to the track, obviously it needs more of my own creative additions, I'll continue working in following days, lots of time until Jan. 30th deadline :) I'd maybe put it into Neurofunk (Drum'n'Bass sub-genre) category, I think to call it "broke".

BTW, I complained about T-RackS on this page, but I used TR5 Classic Clipper in the master and it was quite great, so I feel better about having grabbed this suite. Just not very suited for mixing in case of my PC's performance.

I dunno. I took a break from this track for some days and today I feel like the version 4, especially the lossless original, is fine enough to leave it like that. Yes, I wanted to give it more impact here and there, but it's good as is, considering it's already public, I don't mind those drums' tone much anymore. I would like to work on another track, part of an EP I wanted to prepare with 5 tracks from 2020, I want to mix and master all of them (though one of them needs to be "rescue-mastered" only as - TADA! - the project itself was either not saved or lost later). I'll start tomorrow and will start a new thread sometime soon after, I guess. But still not decided if I rather should wait until new OS is in place and everything installed and activated, I really wanted to start to do that, but it'll take maybe over a month total until everything's done. And should my RAM be the reason for some of the bugs I experienced, it might be best to wait until new modules are purchased and arrive. Depends of how soon I'd get them. So in the meantime I maybe could continue to work indeed.
Ollo x1 headphones
So they arrived 4 days early yesterday. Great but, Register the S/N which then creates an account which then generates an xps calibration file but nowhere to explain how or where to insert that, then a link to usc software on a different site with redeem code, whcih then creates and acc and linl to download. Installed it tried to authorise which it did and has the hardware ID , but not activated lol. Today decided to screenshot they error messages etc and was about to send when I decided on the usc website to go the offline route. Got immediate file which I dragged dropped on and it authorised and registered. Like no explanation! Now have to figure out the xps file. Weirdly there is no L and R on the H/P except you face the jack socket to front, but cable is wired with both red cables not a L or R to a stereo jack. So how does it tell which is which? Might get round to using them soon ...🥺🙁

@John Rowley Came to tell you that YouTube-searching those headphones when I found out about them only showed me one X1-related video, showing exactly where to import those files :) Tell us after some time if you got blown away by the new fidelity :) Which ones did you have before? I was "bragging" how I was going to get them and a couple of things more, but my monetary situation told me to wait. Maybe April 1st? In the meantime, having trained my ears a bit, I got to appreciate my Neumann NDH20 a bit more again :)
