Pick a goal, then find your entry point.
"But I can't"
No, you can.
"But I have school, I have a job, I have homework, I have sports, [insert excuse]...)
But you want to be jacked, right?
"well yeah, but I will start when [insert excuse] is done"
Okay, but there are an infinite amount excuses...
"I know, but this one is different"
How so?
"Because it will never happen again!"
Until the next "unique" situation occurs.
"No this one is ACTUALLY different"
Brother, listen to yourself.
"I am listening to myself, I will start tomorrow, I have homework"
You lie to yourself, you know that right?
"How so?"
You know those "micro breaks" where you scroll on ur phone?
"Yeah?"
There's your example.
"But science shows that it's optimal for studying!"
Did you know that there is a study that shows 86% of the time they are wrong?
"No, I did not know that, well maybe that one is wrong"
Maybe it is, but anyways, I'm just kidding.
"Kidding about what?"
The study on studies being wrong... It's contradictory.
"Oh, true. Ha, so the study is correct!"
You just proved to me, that it doesn't matter.
"What doesn't matter?"
If the study is correct or not.
"Why?"
Because your judgment is off.
"How so?
You went from saying it's true to false in seconds...
"Okay, and?"
You are influenced too easily.
"No I am not"
Okay, well what if I told you this.
"what?"
Doing push-ups between study blocks slows gains.
"I would have to disagree"
I'm just kidding, studies actually show an increase.
"Yeah that makes more sense"
Okay, well I didn't actually look at the study.
"Then what is your point?"
We don't need a "study" to know what to do.
"I see what you are saying..."
Then I ask you now, brother to brother...
"I'm listening?"
Why don't you do push-ups between blocks?
"I can"
That's more like it. Do 10 pushups.
"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Done!"
Nice, how do you feel?
"Better than scrolling!"
Of course, because you have to do the hard work.
"But what about when I am studying"
Especially when you are studying.
"Why?"
Because that is when you don't feel like it.
"Well, how do I get passed the discomfort?"
Start small. You are a beginner.
"How so?"
Can you commit to 1000 pushups every day for the next week?
"No, who do you think I am? One punch, man?
Haha, funny one. How about 100?
"Probably not"
Okay let's do 50.
"Okay, I can probably make that work."
Probably?
"Yeah"
Okay can you 100% commit to 25 per day for a month?
"Okay, yeah 100%"
What about a year?
"No"
What if you were to do 10 every day for the year, could you do 100%?
"100%"
What if we were to bet $500?
"Okay maybe, but I am not betting"
Would you take the bet if it was 1?
"Yes."
Boom, we have your entry point!
"One pushup?.. That's for pu$$sy footed bit$%es..."
Is sticking to your goal for a year for weak guys?
"No"
Who would you rather be?
"Between who?"
The guy who starts at 1000 pushups and sticks with it for maybe a few days.
Or the guys, who starts at 1 pushup, but by the end of the year, is doing more than 1000...
"Guy number two"
Well then just start with one.
"But why not too?"
Starting is hard, staying consistent is harder, let's make it difficult to stop, not start.
"Okay"
Also, be happy simply be showing up at the start.
"Why? I wanna see results"
Well, results compound.
"How so?"
Because the first day you 1g/protein per lb of bodyweight is good.
"Okay?"
Then the next you learn that keeping track of your weight and reps for every set is good.
"Okay?"
Then the next day, you find out the importance of sleep on recovery.
"Okay?"
Then the next day, you read somewhere that stress negatively impacts muscle growth"
"Okay?"
See my point?
"Learn something new everyday?"
Yes, do you know why?"
"mmm, no"
Okay, it is because habits stack upon each other...
...If you always workout, you will naturally be hungrier. This hunger, will in turn tell you to eat more during the day. If you know you need to eat more during the day, you will plan a time to eat another meal. If you plan a time to eat another meal, you will have more time to eat, this gain size. If you know that sleep helps you recover, you will think twice about staying up late every night with your friends on video games. If you know that stress negatively impacts your muscle growth, the you will finish your homework on time.
"So it is like a compounding effect, where for the next to work, it needs the previous in place to work"
Exactly. So your first step, is to decide what you can commit to for a year daily, that will put you in the right direction towards your goal. This will in turn, make it so easy so you never fall off, but because you want great things in life, you will get bored and improve naturally.
So I ask you boys nows, what is the goal, and what is your entry point?
