That bold/italic text in your headline is hurting you with AI search
Noticed a few people in here using it, so flagging it. LinkedIn is now the second most cited source in AI search. Behind Reddit. The fancy bold and italic characters (like 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 or 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁) aren't actual bold text. They're separate Unicode characters made to look like letters. To AI tools reading your profile, they don't register as real words. Semrush and Scrunch just published research on what gets LinkedIn content cited by tools like ChatGPT and Claude. Using this kind of formatting cut citation rates by 58%. Fix it - takes two minutes. Go to your headline and About section. If any of it is fake-bold or fake-italic, retype it in plain text.
Streamlining LinkedIn Connections: Why Real, Responsive, and Relevant Matter
In the vast network that is LinkedIn, it's crucial to maintain a circle that is not only large but also meaningful. Recently, I embarked on a clean-up quest, removing numerous connections that didn't represent real people but were merely company names—LLC, INC, CORP. These profiles were inactive, cluttering my network without adding value. Why focus on real connections? Because the essence of LinkedIn lies in genuine interactions. I use technology that identifies and removes connections without a profile photo. This method helps in ensuring that my network consists of individuals who are present and active. The principle I follow is straightforward—the Three Rs: Real, Responsive, Relevant. 1. Real: Connections should represent real people, not entities or inactive accounts. If a profile feels like a spam account or lacks personal details, it's a candidate for removal. 2. Responsive: Engagement is key. If a connection ignores interactions consistently, it indicates a lack of interest in maintaining the relationship. These are not fruitful for professional growth. 3. Relevant: Each connection should align with your current professional goals and interests. If someone’s industry or role does not resonate with your objectives, consider whether keeping the connection is beneficial. Practical Steps to Optimize Your Network: - Audit Your Connections: Use filters to identify inactive accounts or profiles that do not meet the criteria of being real, responsive, and relevant. - Evaluate Based on Interaction: Keep those who interact—engagement shows interest and value. Those who don't engage and have minimal connections themselves might not be necessary to retain. - Use CRM Tools: Before removing a connection, you might want to add them to your CRM tool. This way, you preserve their contact information without cluttering your LinkedIn network. - Regularly Refresh Your Network: I have about 30,000 connections, and regularly make room for new, engaged individuals. Typically, I remove around 400 old connections and add the same number of fresh, active ones.
