Do you know about Ghost Month in Taiwan?你知道台灣的鬼月嗎？
It is the 7th month of the lunar calendar. People believe that spirits (we call them “good brothers” 好兄弟) enter the human world, so there are many taboos to avoid bad luck.鬼月是農曆七月。人們相信「好兄弟」會來到人間，所以有許多禁忌來避免壞運氣。
Here are some common ones:以下是一些常見的禁忌：
- Don’t whistle or shout loudly at night.晚上不要吹口哨或大喊大叫。
- Don’t pick up random objects or money on the street.不要撿起路上的東西或錢幣。
- Don’t pat other people on the shoulder.不要隨意拍別人的肩膀。
- Don’t open an umbrella indoors.不要在室內開傘。
- Don’t hang clothes outside at midnight.不要在半夜晾衣服。
- Don’t swim in rivers or the ocean at night — people believe spirits may pull you under.晚上不要在河邊或海邊游泳 —— 民間相信鬼魂會把人拉下去。
- Avoid moving to a new house or getting married during Ghost Month.鬼月避免搬家或結婚。
When I was little, my grandma always reminded me not to put chopsticks upright in my rice bowl, because it looks like offering food to the dead.我小時候，奶奶常常提醒我不要把筷子插在飯碗裡，因為那看起來像是在祭拜亡者。
