Match Review Made Simple
What do you ask your players to do with match footage? This is me preparing our Spakenburg post-match review in CoachCraft: adding clips, connecting them to our training goals and including questions to guide reflection. The questions give players something specific to look for and give us a starting point for discussion at training. For me, this is an important part of helping players take ownership. I want them to explain what they see and consider what they could do differently. CoachCraft brings those clips and questions together, with options to assign them to the squad, groups or individuals. How do you get your players actively involved in the review process?

Coach the Person before the Player...
Before you coach the rugby, how well do you know the person? I think pre-season gives us a really important choice as coaches. We can start with the programme, or we can start with the people who are going to live inside that programme. Testing, conditioning and standards all matter. But I increasingly think the first session should also include something much simpler: conversations. What do you want from this season? What happened last season? What are you worried about? What do you need from me? Those conversations give you a picture of your squad that a Bronco score or testing spreadsheet never will. The content plan for this week puts it simply: players commit to coaches who see them. For me, that is also where CoachCraft should add value. Not by replacing the relationship, but by helping us remember what matters afterwards. Goals, notes, wellbeing, feedback and follow-up can keep those conversations alive once the season gets busy. The rugby will come. The relationship has to come first. I’d be interested to hear from other coaches: what is the first question you ask a player when they join your environment?
