The Secret to Team Cohesion
A high-five, a chest bump, or pulling a teammate in by the shoulder goes a remarkably long way. It directly fuels Connection; one of the core 5 C’s of holistic player development. When players physically support each other, they build the mutual trust required to execute under pressure. Coach’s Action Step For Tonight: Observe how your squad interacts after a tough phase or activity. Are they celebrating the small wins? Make it a habit to physically acknowledge your players’ efforts today. How do you proactively build connection in your squad? 👇

@Charlton Smith nice work with the leadership group and sub groups, I think that works really well in an environment where players are past the idea that a sub-group or unit and leading that is "work". Regarding touch, it would be interesting to know what your team thinks about the high-fives after a small error, rather than a shout from the back? With the team I am coaching now, they found the high-fives rather awkward at the start of the season... they weren't used to it. As the season went on, the high fives and grabbing a shoulder on the way to the sheds started becoming a habit, they started to see and feel the value of it, even if some didn't like it, they saw what it did for the team spirit and connection.

100%, @Gurthro Steenkamp - if we make it even more simple than rugby or corporate, and we look at the pure joy a child gets from that high-five when they try something new… whether they fail or get it right, that could be the difference between making or breaking confidence.
NEW Freebie: Performing Under Pressure
New freebie for the community 🙌 Grab yours in the Classroom! I’ve just uploaded a new resource: Performing Under Pressure – The Red to Blue Model. This freebie is designed to help coaches guide players through pressure moments by teaching them how to recognise when they’re in a reactive “Red” state and how to reset back to a calmer, clearer “Blue” state. To be able to do this as a coach, we have to try and experience this ourselves first too. In this module, you’ll find: - a ready-to-use micro-lesson - practical reflection and discussion prompts - scenario-based activities - a printable worksheet (message me for the editable version) It’s a simple, practical tool you can use to develop self-regulation, self-awareness, decision-making, and emotional control in training and competition. Grab it, try it with your players, and let me know how you use it in your sessions 👇

Chaos Creates Confidence
🧲Draw. 🏉Pass. 🏃Follow. This 3 v 4 Draw Pass Follow activity is a great way to train decision-making under pressure. The more you adapt the activity, the closer it gets to simulating game based scenarios. For the attack, the goal was to: - identify and attack space - draw defenders before passing - work hard in support after the pass For the defence, the focus was on: - clear communication - getting line integrity in place quickly - staying connected - forcing the attack into an error Because the entry is unpredictable, players can’t pre-plan too much. They have to scan, communicate, and solve the problem in real time. A simple setup, but a powerful way to coach: reaction speed, communication, support lines, spacing, and defensive connection. Why is it good to include these kinds of activities in our sessions?🧐

Do You Tailor Activities to address Different Skill Levels?
If you run a single, rigid activity and expect it to challenge everyone, you’re missing the point. Your squad has wildly differing levels of experience, physical capability, and game sense. Swipe through ➡️ to learn how you can effectively tailor training to every skill level using Differentiated Instruction through Practice Progression and Regression. We cover tactics like: 📉 Regressing Space: Make the grid larger to allow more time and space for evasion drills. 📈 Progressing Rules: Force playmakers to pass within one second of being touched. 🔍 Flexible Grouping: Run the same activity for different ability groups with entirely separate success criteria. This shift helps you become a proactive teacher, not just a reactive whistle-blower. You anticipate adaptations instead of reacting to mistakes. Action Step For Tonight's Session 📋 When writing your next plan, add ONE Progression (make it harder) and ONE Regression (make it easier) to just one activity. Anticipate the need for change! Be prepared. Do you do this already? Share your approach in the comments below! Save this post for your next session! 📌

@Charlton Smith that’s what makes the freeze frame so powerful too. Do your guys find the freeze frame valuable, even if they don’t like it?
