I saw a video of Tony Robbin’s speaking with a lady and she’s explaining that her husband has disappointed her and she looks back and yells calling him a horrible name. 👀 She was saying that while he was in the room.
When She looks back at Tony he calmly asks her, “which of the six needs were you trying to fill by that remark?”
She pauses, thinks, and says “significance”
It’s unfortunate because later as they are speaking this angry woman who is disrespecting her husband infront of a huge crowd of people admits that she was abused by her father. That her mother was a villain in her life and now we see this picture more clearly, she’s taking out her pain from her childhood on a man, that may not be innocent but is indeed now becoming a target of rage that his wife is taking out on him because of her internal trauma, not his external actions.
She went to the podium claiming she was a victim of her husband but the truth was she had become the attacker because she never wanted to be a victim again.
Tony Robbin’s lists these six core needs we all have as:
- Certainty: The need for safety, security, stability, and comfort.
- Variety: The need for the unknown, change, and new stimuli to feel alive.
- Significance: The need to feel important, unique, special, or needed.
- Connection/Love: The need for a strong feeling of closeness or union with someone or something.
- Growth: An expansion of capacity, capability, or understanding.
- Contribution: A sense of service and focus on helping, giving to, and supporting others.
Key Concepts
Top Needs Drive Life: Everyone has all six needs, but places different values on them. The top two needs dictate a person's decision-making and direction in life.
Positive vs. Negative Meeting: These needs can be met in positive, neutral, or negative ways (e.g., gaining significance through achievement vs. destructive behavior).
Internal Conflict: Tension arises between conflicting needs, such as the need for stability (certainty) vs. the desire for adventure (variety).
Understanding these needs allows individuals to consciously change their behaviors to create more fulfillment.
