One of the most important things we can learn in times like these is the difference between spiritual bypassing and having healthy spiritual boundaries. We have access to an overwhelming amount of tragedy, injustice, violence, and human suffering every day. Completely shutting ourselves off from these realities in the name of “protecting our peace” can become spiritual bypassing, but constantly consuming suffering until we are depleted doesn't necessarily help anyone either. There is a middle path: staying aware, allowing ourselves to care, and protecting enough of our energy to turn that compassion into prayer, service, generosity, advocacy, or meaningful action. Overwhelm and Desensitization Without boundaries, I think we risk falling into two extremes: overwhelm and desensitization. When we consume too much suffering, we can become anxious, angry, hopeless, or emotionally exhausted by situations largely outside of our individual control. But constant exposure can also have the opposite effect. When tragedy becomes part of our everyday content consumption, horrific things can slowly become another headline, video, or statistic to scroll past. Spiritual and emotional boundaries are going to become increasingly important as tragedies continue to surface. Not because we should care less, but because we need to protect our capacity to care. Staying informed does not require watching every graphic video, reading every comment, or following every update. Sometimes we already know enough to understand what is happening, and our energy would be better spent asking what we can actually do about it. The purpose of spiritual boundaries isn't to hoard our energy; it's to steward it.
