BUILDING BLOCKS CHALLENGE: RECIPE CONFIDENCE

This challenge is designed to help you slow down, cook with intention, and become more comfortable executing a recipe from beginning to end. YOUR CHALLENGE - Choose a simple recipe and work through the following steps with focus and preparation. BEFORE COOKING • Read the recipe completely from start to finish • Highlight any unfamiliar cooking terms • Gather all ingredients and tools • Prep ingredients beforehand DURING COOKING • Follow the recipe step-by-step • Taste as you go • Observe textures, smells, and color changes throughout the process Pay attention to how the dish evolves as you cook. Notice the small details that help you better understand technique and timing. This challenge is designed to help you become more familiar with common cooking terms by seeing them in action, not just reading definitions on a page. YOUR CHALLENGE - Choose a simple recipe and complete the following steps as you cook. Step 1: Identify Familiar Terms Highlight or write down every cooking term you already recognize. Step 2: Identify Unfamiliar Terms Circle or underline any words or techniques you do not know. Step 3: Define Before Cooking Use the glossary to look up and define unfamiliar terms before you begin. Step 4: Observe the Techniques in Real Time As you cook, pay attention to what each technique actually looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Ask yourself: • What does simmering actually look like? • How is sautéing different from searing? • What changes when ingredients are folded instead of stirred? REFLECTION • Which cooking term feels the most natural to you now? • Which technique would you like more practice with? • How did understanding the terminology improve your cooking experience? Share your reflections, discoveries, or even terms that surprised you below. The more fluent you become in culinary language, the more confident and intuitive cooking begins to feel.

Step 2: Gather Everything You Need Collect: • All ingredients • Tools • Pans • Measuring equipment Step 3: Prep Every Ingredient Beforehand• Chop • Measure • Wash • Portion Step 4: Organize Your Workspace Arrange your ingredients neatly in the order they’ll be used. Step 5: Cook the Recipe As you cook, pay attention to how preparation affects your overall experience in the kitchen. REFLECTION QUESTIONS • Did cooking feel more organized? • What differences did you notice in your stress level or focus? • Which parts of preparation helped you the most? • Would you use mise en place again in future cooking? Share your experience, reflections, photos, or even your prep setup below! Sometimes confidence in the kitchen doesn’t come from cooking faster. It comes from preparing better.
