Split Screen Videos

Hi,

I record my videos with a Canon Camera, and at the same time I use Zoom to record my audio as it's fed through a FocusRite amp and Shure Mic.

In the edit suite (FCPX), I merge the audio with the moving pictures off the Canon. I'm reading texts off my phone during the filming, and add screen shots of what I am reading in the edit FCPX after.

However, is there another way of doing a live split screen recording so that I don't need to add the the texts/images/screenshots on the FCPX timeline?

I see REAX videos on social media all the time and I'm wondering how they do that?
